For SMI, an Economic Rebound May Be Just Around the Corner

Norwood-based company Southern MIddlesex Industries, Inc., and its President, Darrell MacLean, have been undertaking projects in several other New England states during the recession. Southern Middlesex Industries, colloquially referred to as 'SMI', is a company that specializes in abatement -- most notably of asbestos, lead, and mold -- and demolition. In business for more than 20 years, SMI has traditionally taken jobs all over Massachusetts. However, during the current economic slump, SMI has won several bids for large projects in both Connecticut and Rhode Island. Near the New York border, in Hamden, CT, SMI won a contract for the asbestos abatement at Hamden Memorial Town Hall, which is undergoing major renovations. While current economic hardships and political uncertainty may have caused some to scale back their operations, Mr. MacLean clearly has enough confidence in the markets to push SMI forward through the recession.
