Southern Middlesex Industries, colloquially referred to as 'SMI', is a company that specializes in abatement -- most notably of asbestos, lead, and mold -- and demolition. In business for more than 20 years, SMI has traditionally taken jobs all over Massachusetts. However, during the current economic slump, SMI has won several bids for large projects in both Connecticut and Rhode Island. Near the New York border, in Hamden, CT, SMI won a contract for the asbestos abatement at Hamden Memorial Town Hall, which is undergoing major renovations. While current economic hardships and political uncertainty may have caused some to scale back their operations, Mr. MacLean clearly has enough confidence in the markets to push SMI forward through the recession.

SMI Performs Renovations to the Quincy Senior Center

SMI was awarded the task of removing and abating several asbestos ridden areas of the Quincy Senior Center in January of 2009. This twenty-five thousand dollar job requested various procedures to be performed such as removing 3,000 square feet of non-asbestos containing VCT tiles and the removal of approximately 6,800 square feet of asbestos containing adhesive. Another aspect of the job included the removal of eighty-five linear feet of asbestos containing caulking on the exterior doors of the Senior Center. Both SMI and the City of Quincy were quite pleased with the results.

SMI Sucessfully Removes Asbestos From Roslindale Apartment Complex

The Washington Beech Apartments in Roslindale, Massachusetts were the location of an asbestos and hazardous materials abatement project for which Southern Middlesex Industries was the subcontractor. Throughout the job, SMI provided the proper technique for removing and disposing of asbestos containing and hazardous/regulated building materials from the apartments. This project continued for just around four months to allow for satisfactory completion. Since none of the other work like the demolition of the buildings and the construction of the new buildings time was the critical issue. Darrell MacLean of SMI has praised the hard work of his crews.

SMI Performs Abatement in the Franklin Park Apartment Buildings

Norwood-based Southern Middlesex Industries was the subcontractor that was awarded a contract to perform the abatement in the Franklin Park Apartment buildings in Dorchester earlier this summer. Southern Middlesex Industries, or SMI was contracted by CWC Builders of Newton, MA. The project involved the removal of both lead and asbestos tiles in apartments that needed to undergo renovations. Both CWC, SMI, and SMI's president, Darrell MacLean reported that they were satisfied with the job that was done.
